Formgiving is a class where small- and medium-scale design projects are carried out to a high degree of aesthetic refinement. Emphasis is placed on generating the appropriate forms to the task and setting.
This course requires completion of four design projects, each representing a refined statement of form. The four project titles are:
- Three Form Studies in Opposites
- Three Pens in Three Styles
- An Illuminating Object
- A Fetish - a Personal Exploration
Each project requires development of multiple concepts through rapid sketching and quick model construction. Presentation of quality drawings is required for some projects, form and functional studies for others. In addition to the projects, the course emphasizes the use of visual thinking techniques, the role of intuitive and non-rational thinking, and the processes of brainstorming and Express/Test/Cycle to "solve" the problems presented in the project briefs.
