User interface design for educational healthcare tools

IBM Research Africa is a new and dynamic lab developing solutions for
the major issues facing Africa today. This project is focused on one
of the 'grand challenges' facing healthcare providers across Africa:
how do you train enough health workers to cope with Africa's booming
population? The number of health workers needs to be scaled up as the
population grows, yet traditional training infrastructure cannot
train the number of health workers that will be required. This
project will examine how technology can aid the training of community
health workers in East Africa, enabling them to provide higher levels
of care to the communities they work in.

The internship is based in the Nairobi lab and will focus on the
design of user interfaces for such a tool. The intern will implement,
field test and iterate designs to improve educational outcomes, so
the applicant must be comfortable traveling to rural locations in
Kenya and working independently. Ideally, the applicant will have
prior experience of working or living in a developing country
combined with a strong interest in human-computer interaction. The
applicant should have a computer science background, or relevant
experience, with a very strong preference for experience with
Android, HTML/CSS, JS, and front-end, user-facing projects.

Education Qualification

At minimum, penultimate year undergraduate or Masters student, with a
experience in UI design. Preferred, PhD Students with experience in
UI design and a passion for healthcare and development.
