answers and insights they seek –– so they can do
what they do best: improve the world around us.
Information about Agilent is available at www.agilent.com.

Agilent’s Pathology Division develops pathology
solutions for tissue-based cancer diagnostics.
Our portfolio of solutions includes fully
automated systems, all operating in a
highly-regulated market environment. We are using
lean lab approaches to increase our customers’
productivity and efficiency while simultaneously
eliminating the chances of operation errors in their workflows.

Agilent's Diagnostics and Genomics Group
Engineering team is a global group focused on
development of automated clinical workflow
solutions for both the Genomics and Pathology
Divisions. The Santa Clara, California based team
is looking for an experienced, senior technology
leader with a strong medical device background to
drive development of a new advanced instrument development project.

This is an opportunity to join an enthusiastic
and dynamic team and work closely with a cross
functional array of technical and application
experts, stake holders, manufacturing, and service teams.

Position Description and Responsibilities:

• Senior electrical engineer responsible for
providing technical leadership and robust, cost
effective electrical engineering design solutions
for highly automated, complex clinical lab instrumentation products.

• Responsible for complete, top-to-bottom
electrical solutions, from system-level
architectural concept generation and evaluation
to detailed module design and documentation.

• Works closely with the mechanical, firmware,
and software architects to reduce broad
instrument requirements into structured concepts;
includes component research, high level concept
modeling, and identification of low level
specifications needed to achieve functional requirements.

• Responsible for detailed control circuit
designs, PCB layout designs, noise management,
power supply, communication infrastructure,
component selection, and complete documentation.

• Designs and analyzes circuits involving, but
not limited to: filtering, signal conditioning,
integration of sensors, motors, and
microcontrollers, interfaces with and conversion
between analog and digital signal domains, and
interfaces between electrical subsystems.

• Owns product designs through all phases of the
product life cycle, from concept feasibility,
through design and test, to effective transfer to
manufacturing, and support for field and manufacturing escalations.

• Responsible for documentation, per FDA
regulations for developing diagnostic products,
including requirements, design input
specifications, risk assessments, design intent,
theory of operations, design reviews, technical
analysis supporting critical design decisions and
component selections, test plans for verifying
the design, test reports, cost analysis, power
budget analysis, block diagrams, circuit
schematics, PCB layouts, PCA BOMs, cable
drawings, and manufacturing instructions.

• Closely communicates with and manages
electrical CAD resources in development of
schematics and PCB layout designs and
documentation; may directly enter schematics and create PCB layouts.

• Hands-on in the lab, including, but not limited
to: bread board prototyping, PCA first article
inspection, design verification testing, and troubleshooting.

• Considers and documents multiple solution
options, showing why the selected option best
meets product and module requirements.

• Collaborates with cross functional disciplines,
including mechanical, firmware, and software
design engineers, applications scientists,
technicians, manufacturing and field
service/support engineers, marketing, quality,
and QA, within and across company divisions.

• Serves as an escalation point for complex
issues and uses wide-ranging experience to apply
broad concepts and theories to achieve innovative and effective solutions.

• Contributes to development of new theories and
methods, uses advanced approaches and concepts
where information is seldom available,
proactively shares progress and solicits ideas,
and communicates vision and strategy.

• Assesses technical risks, distinguishes between
major factors and noise, identifies and
communicates trade-offs, proposes priorities as
well as strategic and tactical plans, and owns
execution of tasks, on time, to meet project milestones.

• Can appropriately shift between low level,
detailed technical discussions and high level
project planning/updates with management
• Able to explain complex technical issues to
broader audiences, in simple terms, without using
technical jargon or oversimplifying

• Independent and self-driven, with reputation
for initiating action to quickly and effectively address issues.

• Strong problem solving and decision making skills.

• Thorough, with high standards for quality work product.

• Proven record for meeting commitments in
schedule-driven environments, accurately
estimating time required to perform tasks, and
managing time between multiple projects.

• Comfortable adapting to changing project goals.

USB, I2C, SPI, CAN, Ethernet) to control various
types of robotic and liquid handling components
and sensors, including, but not limited to
brushless DC and stepper motors, heaters, TECs,
solenoids, valves, pumps, liquid sensors,
temperature sensors, pressure sensors, bar code readers, cameras, and encoders.
• Designing robust, cost effective, RoHS
compliant, and C.E. (or equivalent) compliant
control circuits that include proper management
of noise and consideration for tolerance stack-ups.
• Documenting per FDA regulations for developing diagnostic products.

• Broad and deep expertise with methods for
debugging and troubleshooting complex issues, including issues with EMC.

• Competence using test equipment such as
multi-meters, oscilloscopes, data acquisition devices, and logic analyzers.
