Ed Carryer is the Director of the Smart Product Design Laboratory (SPDL) in the Design Division of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. You can usually find him in his office, 511 Terman or the Smart Product Design Lab in the Thornton Annex. The fastest way to contact him is via e-mail: (carryer"AT"stanford"DOT"edu). though the phone and US Mail work too.
My industrial experience varies wildly, from designing water treatment facilities for coal and nuclear power plants for Sargent & Lundy to designing the electronic controller for an Arctic Heated Glove under contract to NASA. I spent eight years in the Detroit area working in and about the auto industry. During that time I worked for Ford, GM and AMC on electronic engine control systems, predominantly for turbo-charged engines. I have an active design consultancy that has tackled such varied projects as an engine controller for an outboard motor manufacturer, an automated blood gas analyzer, and a turbo-charger boost control system for a new type of turbo-charger.
In the summer of 1994 I organized the first Workshop on Mechatronics Education. This workshop brought together 43 Mechatronics educators from around the world to discuss the issues related to teaching in this new field. The Proceedings of that workshop are available on a site maintained by the Synthesis Coalition of the National Science Foundation, one of the workshop sponsors.
Most of my time these days are consumed by a combination of teaching ME218
, EE118 and
administering the SPDL
