So you like Green energy, high voltage, and machining? So do we. A
mechanical engineering internship is available now at Artificial Muscle
in Sunnyvale, a scant 10 miles from Stanford campus.
SUMMARY
A mechanical engineering intern will design, build, and test prototypes
of a dielectric elastomer generator. You will be doing fast-paced,
multi-disciplinary, hands-on work with a diverse group of scientists,
engineers, and technicians. The facilities are ideal for expressing
your inner designer, with on site laser-cutter, 3D printer, CNC milling
machine, lathe, and more.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Design of generator components (SolidWorks, strength of
materials, prior experience prototyping)
* Develop assembly methods and fixtures suitable for handling
large pieces of a delicate elastomer film (requires creative problem
solving)
* Instron tests to measure mechanical and electrical performance
of dielectrics and electrodes
* Machining of some prototype components (preferred but not
required)
* Assembly of a bench scale prototype
REQUIREMENTS
* Willingness to get your hands dirty but keep the lab clean
* Commitment - Able to work at least 15 hrs/wk during academic
year. Full time summer employment is available based on good
performance.
* Graduate students and ME's in their junior or senior years will
have completed the appropriate classes.

MaterialScience, is developing revolutionary motion products based on
Electroactive Polymer (EAP) technology. We work with forward-thinking
companies to create new markets and transform existing ones with a new
generation of actuators, sensors, and generators for applications
ranging from adaptive optics to energy generation. Our Reflex(TM)
Actuator platform has moved haptic feedback to a new level of
performance with high fidelity that puts the sense of touch back into
the touchscreens now found everywhere. AMI's clients include many
Fortune 100 companies and other high profile technology companies. We
are located at 749 N. Mary Ave, Sunnyvale CA, 94085.
