Principal Product Designer
IEB Design Team -- Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft

The IEB Design team is a multidisciplinary team whose charter is to
design world-class end-to-end experiences that are desirable,
thoughtful, consistent, and easy-to-use across Microsoft's
entertainment and mobile businesses. Our goal is to ensure full
integration of brand, industrial design, user interface, graphic
design, usability, and business strategy.

Primary Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for developing and delivering rich
experience-led design solutions to the market through detailed
industrial design process, complex 3D surfacing and form development,
integration and refinement with engineering, and successful project
management into production. This position will require a hands-on
collaborative person who will build strong partnerships across
Design, Engineering, Planning, and Research, to deliver innovative
end to end solutions.

Requirements include a BS with a minimum of 10 years of industrial
design, product design, and/or mechanical engineering experience
within a product design organization. The position requires a strong
knowledge and skillset in all phases of industrial design product
development as well as deep technical knowledge around injection
molding, high-volume metal fabrication processes, materials and other
manufacturing processes. Experience in a product development
consulting environment is highly desirable. Key personal competencies
and qualities of the ideal candidate are: galvanizing presentation
and communication abilities, demonstrated leadership skills, and the
ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams in developing smart,
elegant solutions to complex design problems.

Requirements:

- Solid knowledge of industrial design, 3D surface development,
mechanical engineering, and product development
- Expert in Class A surfacing, whether driving Alias, Rhino,
Solidworks, or Pro/E.
- A strong portfolio demonstrating breadth and creativity in
successful product design, versatility with design and rapid
prototyping tools and methods, and a strong understanding of design
and creative process is required.
- Consumer centric design process background with proven ability to
deliver design for product families that align with brand vision.
- Strong verbal and visual communication skills, ability to
communicate to senior leadership.
- Deep knowledge in materials and manufacturing processes common to
the consumer electronics industry.
- Experience developing and managing relationships with internal and
external partners including suppliers, technical alliances, and key
customers or clients.
- Experience in designing consumer electronics devices and
implementing innovative materials and manufacturing is a key
consideration. Proven ability to innovate within and extend current
technology through design.
- Ability to build team alignment around complex, innovative design solutions.
- A bachelor's degree in industrial design, product design, or
mechanical engineering is required.
- A minimum of 10 years work experience designing within a
collaborative environment is required.
- Additional experience in a secondary field such as EE or SW is
advantageous but not required, as is the ability to mock up
functional prototypes that span ME, EE and UX (eg. Arduino).
