job_102212a: WASH Program Manager, iDE Zambia (Lusaka, Zambia)

From: Kristin Burns <kristin.burns_at_stanford.edu>
Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2012 07:07:03 -0700

iDE is looking for a dynamic individual for the role of Program
Manager, who will lead the design, testing, and creation of the
strategy for catalyzing rural sanitation markets in Zambia.

The Challenge:

You have the potential to have massive global impact and be at the
frontier of international development work.

2.5 billion people do not have a toilet, suffering dire consequences
in health, environment, economics, and human dignity. Purchasing a
latrine is prohibitively expensive and logistically challenging for
the majority of people living in developing countries. Diarrheal
illnesses kill more children than HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis
combined. Well-meaning subsidy programs have depressed demand for
toilets, stymied private markets, and discouraged pride of ownership.

Building on its existing award-winning work in sanitation marketing,
iDE is developing a program to identify opportunities and constraints
for improving the supply and demand of sanitation in rural Zambia.
The program will design, test, and implement marketing strategies and
business models that will enable the private sector to profitably
manufacture, sell, and distribute sanitation products and services
for rural households.

Responsibilities Include:

-Managing the overall program implementation including budgets and
the work plan

-Working collaboratively with the iDE Zambia Country Director and the
Global WASH team to design, develop, and field-test marketing and
business strategy concepts.

-Developing a plan for scaling up nationally the marketing and
business strategies.

-Leading a dynamic inter-disciplinary team including product
designer, local engineering and marketing experts.

-Working with government to build relationships, coordinate, and collaborate.

We Are Looking For:

A creative problem solver with an entrepreneurial spirit and the
following qualifications:

-7+ years experience with marketing and business strategy
development, preferably in multiple countries

-Project and budget management experience

-Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector experience

-Willingness and ability to 'make things happen', getting dirty in the field

-Experience working within sub-Saharan Africa

-Leadership and mentorship skills with experience managing teams of 10+ people

-Experience coordinating and collaborating with multi-stakeholder
groups. Must possess strong skills in representation, negotiation,
and coordination skills, diplomacy and patience.

-Experience working with small and medium sized enterprises

-Experience with Human Centered Design is a plus

-Excellent verbal and written communication skills

-Minimum Bachelor's degree in relevant field

-Valid driver's license

This position will be based in Lusaka, Zambia with frequent trips to
rural areas. Some travel outside of Zambia may also be required.
