Staff Mechanical Engineer - Surface Modeling-130000Y1

Department Description

This Design Intent Realization engineering
department resides within the Consumer Experience
Design organization, which is responsible for
specifying the appearance, feel, and user
interface of all mobile handsets. This specific
team provides early stage engineering and
prototyping to drive product concepts to
realizable solutions. Product material systems,
surface geometry, internal component layouts, and
overall form are designed, modeled, and analyzed
by this department in both the early visual model
stage as well as through the product execution phase.

Scope of Responsibilities/Expectations

-Lead the upfront design work on new product concepts.
-Collaborate with Industrial Designers,
Engineering, and Business teams throughout product definition and development.
-Work closely with Industrial Design in
generating accurate Class A surface models for
downstream use such as prototyping, simulation,
detailed part design, and manufacturing.
-Participate in brainstorming sessions and team
meetings to define design priorities.
-Undertaking select technology development
programs in support of industrial design concepts.
-Refine product surface models during product
development quickly and accurately.
-Invent new design concepts and innovate ways to improve designs.
-Reviewing/critiquing designs for mechanical
robustness, cost savings, size reductions, etc.

Specific Knowledge/Skills

As a design engineer, you must have a passion for
delivering innovative product experiences. You
must also have a strong eye for product detail
and design intent accuracy. It is also important
you can manage multiple products at once with
strong communication and organizational skills.

• The minimum of a BSME degree is required; while
advanced engineering degree(s) are preferred,
product design experience is the overriding consideration with 5 years minimum.
• Expert Level Pro/E user – familiar with all
ProEngineer modules with an emphasis on advanced
surface modeling for creating robust parametric
models that accurately capture design intent.
• Well versed in top down design methodology,
utilizing master merge, copy geom, and skeletons.
• Proficiency in miscellaneous 3D and 2D tools
such as Rhino, Adobe, Illustrator, etc.
• Must have a solid understanding of product
design “best practices” (clearances, robustness, environmental stress, etc.).
• As a central function working with many
competing interests, negotiation, communication,
and collaboration skills are essential. Trust
and camaraderie are critical to success.
• Must have a solid understanding of
manufacturing and fabrication techniques -
injection molding, metal stamping/forming; die
casting, machining, electroforming, etc.
• Experience in and knowledge of smart phone
components (PCB/flex circuits, displays, touch
sensors, imagers, batteries, connector systems, etc.) is a plus.
• Working knowledge of EE design considerations
(antenna issues, ESD issues, shielding, etc.).
