Professor of the Practice in Engineering Physics at Tulane University

Description

The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at Tulane
University (New Orleans, Louisiana) invites applications for a
Professor of the Practice (PoP) position in Engineering Physics to
begin in Spring or Fall 2016. The PoP position is a non-tenured full
time academic year (nine month) teaching position (3,3 load) with a
renewable 3-year appointment, and it carries a competitive salary and
benefits commensurate with the candidate's qualifications. Faculty
promoted to Senior PoP serve renewable 5-year terms.

Department

The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics offers a Ph.D.
program in Physics and two undergraduate programs: 1) Physics founded
in 1895 and 2) Engineering Physics (an ABET accredited engineering
program) founded in 2006. In addition, the department has a strong
materials component, and the PoP may have the opportunity to
participate in an anticipated expansion of the materials science and
engineering effort at Tulane. More information about the Department
of Physics and Engineering Physics can be found at:

Responsibilities

An important component of the PoP position will be to teach, direct,
and promote the two-semester undergraduate Team Design and
Professional Practice course (the capstone course for Engineering
Physics majors) and to establish projects and long term
collaborations in conjunction with industrial (local and national),
university, and government entities. The PoP will collaborate with
Tulane's Maker Space student prototyping facility. The PoP will also
maintain and improve the Engineering Physics design lab, and
facilitate summer internships for rising seniors in Engineering
Physics. The balance of the PoP faculty member's teaching
responsibilities will involve teaching Engineering Physics courses in
some of the following areas: electronics and electronics engineering,
mechanical engineering, device engineering, materials science and
engineering, optical engineering, computer engineering, polymer
science and engineering, instrumentation development, advanced
manufacturing theory and practice, applications of superconductivity,
applied nanoscience, renewable energy, etc. Additionally the
successful candidate will take the lead when preparing the department
for ABET reviews and for ensuring the Engineering Physics program's
adherence to ABET guidelines.

Qualifications

Successful candidates for the PoP position must have a Ph.D. in
engineering or a closely related field, with a proven and sustained
record of academic success at the university level, and demonstrable
experience in engineering environments. The successful candidate will
demonstrate the ability to successfully teach and develop engineering
courses, and will have demonstrated the ability to work in
collaboration with a wide variety of professionals on
cross/multi-disciplinary projects.

Application details

Applications should include 1) a CV, 2) a statement of the
candidate's approach to conducting the capstone Team Design course,
3) a statement of teaching and industrial experience and philosophy,
and 4) contact information for three references. All materials should
be submitted
to
