What You Will Deliver:

  * Lead in rapidly inventing and prototyping new electromechanical camera-delivery approaches that help our team resolve high-level systems problems in sophisticated, multi-arm surgical robots. Requires rapid design and prototyping to support proof-of-concept testing on a 2-week cadence for urgent, high-visibility project. Includes precision mounting, actuators, high-speed interconnects and cabling, development and integration of custom PCBAs, miniaturized harnessing, flex circuits, camera modules and wafer-level cameras, ISP boards, firmware
  * Work with optical engineer to break compactness barriers with new high-performance camera prototypes in first 2 months, taking lead on electromechanical integration
  * Work with our robotic-instruments team to invent new delivery approaches and build prototypes that quickly integrate to existing robotic-drive components for proof-of-concept testing
  * Grow to serve as technical expert on robotic-system connectivity of sub-6 mm image sensors: roadmap for sensor data protocols and interface components, potential to enable new endoscope architectures, evolving ecosystem of devices and suppliers, etc.
  * Work with Staff Mechanical Engineers to develop supplier network and internal tools to accelerate electrical and mechanical concept prototyping by 2-3x: in-house micro-3D printing and micro-assembly tools, quick-turn suppliers of high-speed multilayer PCBs, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  * Bachelor's degree in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, materials science, or related degree
  * Minimum of 5 years hands-on engineering experience and proven track record in hardware development, with at least 2 years in robotics or mechatronics
  * High-level proficiency in 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) and tolerance analysis of highly constrained designs (GD&T).
  * Hands-on skills for building prototypes, including at least 2 of the following: machining, mechanical assembly, electromechanical integration, soldering, etc.
  * Experience partnering with and managing a network of suppliers for any of the following: quick-turn precision machining, 3D printing, laser-cutting, PCBAs, and actuators
  * This position will be based in Santa Clara, CA and may require up to 10% travel depending on business needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  * Advanced degree
  * Hands-on fabrication or machine-shop experience with tools such as 3-axis mill, lathe, CNC, 3D printer, laser-cutting machines as well as inspection equipment such as OMN/CMM and CT scan.
  * Experience in at least 2 of the following: designing simple PCBAs, designing and sourcing flex circuits, and sourcing high-speed cables
  * Experience designing and building functional prototypes of mechatronic systems incorporating compute, sensing, and actuation, from selecting drivers to onboard computer platforms
  * Medical device experience
