The GM Advanced Technology Silicon Valley Office
(ATSVO) has multiple openings. GM ATSVO is a
strategic arm of GM R&D, dual reporting to GM
Ventures. Our mission is to discover and quickly
evaluate new and innovative technologies,
concepts, companies, and people, primarily in the
SF Bay Area, and rapidly integrate the results of
technology exploration projects into GM’s global
vehicle development process. You will be part of
a team concentrating on interdisciplinary
research and development projects in the fields
of Embedded Computing Platforms, Wireless
Connectivity, Infotainment, Telematics, HMI,
Advanced Materials, EDA Tools, Automotive
Cleantech, and Social Media. The team will work
on hardware and software solutions, with emphasis
on embedded systems and proof-of-concept
prototype integration into cars. This position
involves frequent travel, in particular to
Detroit, and requires independent, flexible, and
highly self-motivated engineers to work on
advanced technology R&D projects at GM.

In the context of this position, you will:
· Observe new trends at an early stage and
identify enabling leading edge technologies,
features and concepts relevant to GM and its
customers by e.g. attending conferences,
breakfasts, VC portfolio presentations, VLAB events, PARC Forums, Buck’s, etc.
· Leverage your professional and alumni
networks to gain early access to relevant technologies and companies.
· Initiate regular company contacts and visits.
· Conduct and manage short collaborative
assessments of technologies/features/concepts
with local high tech companies, addressing the
technical, business, automotive, and vehicle integration feasibility.
· Perform due diligence on potential GM
Ventures investments from both a technical and business perspective.
· Maintain regular and persistent presence
at GM’s R&D HQ in Warren, MI to learn and
understand GM’s needs and nurture personal GM network.
· Conduct literature surveys and generate technical briefs.
· Generate proof-of-concept in-vehicle prototypes.

Your skills include:
· Knowledge of Silicon Valley and the high-tech industry in general.
· Knowledge of and interest in the
automotive industry and the validation
requirements differentiating automotive electronics from consumer electronics.
· Excellent software architecture and
programming skills in languages such as C, C++,
Java, Javascript, HTML, PHP, Python, SQL, and
Ruby, on different application frameworks
(Android, Adobe AIR, QT, .NET, etc.) and SDKs (Xcode, Eclipse, etc.).
· Excellent project management and
organizational skills as well as the ability to
work independently and effectively in a team environment.
· Ability to communicate effectively with
(remote and local) peers through regular
reporting, publication and presentations.
· Willingness to travel [~25%], primarily
to Detroit, as required, to guarantee successful
transfer of your results into GM’s product development chain.
· Desire to see the fruits of your labor
realized in actual production vehicles and the
willingness to remain engaged in a particular
project long after the technical feasibility has been proven.
· Vision for future electronics trends and
their impact on our industry. High level of
creativity and innovation and strategic thinking.
· Hands-on programming of lightly embedded
systems and back end servers and the rapid
buildup of functional prototypes for testing and validation.

Experience Required:

· MS in EECS or related field, including
ME with a smart product development, MEMS or EECS focus.
· 3 years of professional experience in
automotive, high-tech or related industries.
· Extensive and broad technical expertise
and demonstrable capabilities (illustrated by
successful implementation of past and current
projects) in at least one of the following:
o Chip and board level embedded
hard/software platforms, integration of consumer
electronics with embedded and distributed networks.
o PC, mobile, or web-based applications
o Client/server topologies, cloud
computing, streaming and packet-based
communications, media transport mechanisms and DRM methodologies.
o Mechamatronics, advanced materials,
sensors and actuators. Comfortable with MEMS, Nano, Wireless, RF, CMOS, etc.
o Wireless networking (WAN and LAN),
communication protocols, infrastructure
requirements, performance analysis, and network
topology. Current and future wireless standards.
o Human-Machine Interaction, including DSP,
speech processing, voice in/output, text to
speech, GUI’s, multi-modal interfaces for immersive environments.
o Development tools to support integration
of technologies into future automotive platforms.
Preferred:
    * Experience in bringing professional or
consumer electronics products to market, from
concept to customer delivery and support.
    * Experience in startups and venture capital
either from an investor and/or entrepreneur perspective.
    * Experience contributing to standards committees and industry groups.
    * Some experience in corporate strategy and business development.
    * PhD in EECS or related field.
    * 5+ years of professional experience.
    * Technical experience in 2 or more of the above areas.
