Several R&D positions open, Medtronic Spine and Bioloics in Sunnyvale.
As a global leader in the spinal surgery market,
Medtronic recently completed the acquisition of
Kyphon, a Sunnyvale based spinal device business.
Now, the group increases the opportunities for
Medtronics thriving Spinal and Biologics
business to treat even more patients around the
world with a broader variety of spinal conditions.
While both businesses have expertise in minimally
invasive, highly effective treatments for the
spine, Medtronics focus has traditionally
centered on treatment options for youth and
middle-aged patients with scoliosis and
degenerative disc disease in the cervical and
lumbar spine. By contrast, the Sunnyvale
operation specializes in treating older patients
with vertebral compression fractures, spinal stenosis and other conditions.
R & D CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Responsibilities:
Development of orthopedic products for the spine.
Develop concepts and ideas into workable prototypes.
Create CAD models of prototypes and final product designs.
Execute diagnostic analyses on design performance.
Design experiments and write protocols to
evaluate products against performance criteria.
Work with medical professionals to develop and
understand device requirements.
Interact with suppliers to refine design and manufacturing methods.
Analyze data, draw conclusions and make
recommendations for action during the product plans.
Work with project teams to define and complete
tasks in accordance with project plans.
Generate and document invention disclosures to
further develop intellectual property positioning.
Provide technical leadership and expertise to
guide and mentor junior members of technical staff.
May direct the work of a R&D Product Designer
or R&D Technician as necessary, on an ad hoc basis.
Support the Medtronic Quality Policy and Quality System.
Other duties as assigned.
Education/job experience/requirements:
Minimum BS in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering. Masters degree is a plus.
2-5 years of industry experience.
Proficient in mechanical product design,
preferably in the medical device industry.
Comprehensive knowledge of other related
disciplines such as stress analysis, strength of materials, fatigue, etc.
Proficient in CAD software (preferably SolidWorks)
Experience in FEA is a plus (COSMOS, Abaqus, Ansys).
Proven track record of innovation and problem
solving to apply technical principles to technology development.
Practical understanding of medical device
quality system requirements including design controls.
Prototyping skills - strong knowledge of
manufacturing processes (machining, laser welding, molding, extrusion, etc.)
Strong communication skills (written and oral).
