Compensation: Competitive - dependent on candidate qualifications.

Role: The Usability Design Engineer will ensure that the ICON A5 is
the most user-friendly aircraft ever created. This role is directly
charged with specifying and managing the design of a wide range of
components for both the interior and the exterior of the A5 aircraft
(e.g., gauges, controls, handles, etc.). Most of these components
will be sourced OEM, often with some custom modifications. In some
cases the components will be custom designed.

The position requires bridging the needs of engineering, industrial
design, manufacturing, branding, ergonomics and user-interface
design. It demands highly structured thinking to navigate back and
forth between technical engineering information and more subjective
disciplines like aesthetics, graphics, color and materials.

The Usability Design Engineer will work closely with ICON's
industrial design team, engineering team, and supply chain manager.
The position will also require interfacing with component suppliers
to gain more detailed technical information and to manage the
development of custom component designs.


Reports to: VP Design

Focus: 65% Internal, 35% External

Primary Areas of Responsibilities:
* Ensure that every user touchpoint on the ICON A5 is
thoughtful and intuitive.
* Assess the benefits of different component solutions and
configurations through research, interviews and user testing. Present
findings and recommendations in the form of trade studies to the
company's industrial design and engineering teams. Make
recommendations and secure consensus of key team members.
* Manage the selection, sourcing and/or design of components,
whether OEM, customized OEM, or custom designed. Interface with the
company's design and engineering groups to ensure these components
meet requirements. Work with suppliers to ensure quality through production.
* Manage the creation of customized graphical interfaces. Work
with the company's design and engineering groups to ensure that these
interfaces are intuitive, thoughtful and visually pleasing.

Success Indicators:
* Both engineering team members and industrial design team
members have high confidence in the person's thoroughness and
decision-making process.
* Highly positive user feedback during cockpit interface
testing and overall aircraft usability testing, from both pilots and
non-pilots.
* Final product delivered by vendors is high quality, reliable,
cost appropriate and matches design specifications.
* Final product meets stringent weight and performance requirements.

Required Experience:
* BA or Master's in Product Design or Engineering
* Superb analytical thinking skills. This person will be held
to an extremely high standard of structured thinking by his or her
peers and managers.
* Extremely detail oriented
* 5-10+ years of design experience involving human factors
and/or user interface design
* 5-10+ years of experience navigating the competing needs of
industrial design and engineering
* 5-10+ years of experience interfacing with component suppliers
* Direct experience with prototyping
* Excellent communication skills
* Excellent computer skills including MS Word, PowerPoint,
Excel and Photoshop
* Deadline and completion driven
* Performs at the highest standard of quality and integrity
* Familiar with light aircraft

Ideal Experience:
* Experienced pilot
* Previous relevant experience in aircraft industry
* Previous relevant experience in a related industry
(automobile, motorcycle, boat, etc.)
* Skilled in CAD software, Pro/E or equivalent
* Passion for motorsports (motorcycles, Jet Skis, cars, boats, etc.)
* Passion for aviation and flying
