Associate Engineer (Summer Intern)

THE PROBLEM
Asthma is a serious health problem. It is one of
the nation’s most common and costly diseases.
There are more than 20 million asthmatics in the
U.S. In 2000, 12 million people reported having
an asthma attack that required urgent care. This
resulted in 10.4 million physician office visits,
1.8 million emergency department visits, 465,000
hospital admissions (average LOS of 3 days), and
more than 5,000 deaths. Asthma-related healthcare
costs are estimated at $14 billion per year. The
prevalence and mortality of the disease are on
the rise, current treatments are limited, and there is no known cure.
THE COMPANY
Asthmatx, Inc. is a medical device company
focused on addressing the unmet needs of the
millions of patients with severe asthma. We are
developing an interventional/therapeutic device
designed to fundamentally change the standard of
care of these patients. We are backed by several
premier venture capital firms, and are working
with many of the world’s foremost experts in the
study and treatment of asthma.
THE SITUATION
We are looking for a special person to work with
a talented team and take a hands-on role
supporting process development, prototyping,
engineering testing, equipment release, assembly
troubleshooting, writing/revising work
instructions, and transferring new processes into
production. This role will help ensure high
quality products are delivered to meet customer
needs, while collaborating with R&D and QA team
members to optimize and further develop our
product and procedure for market adoption. You
will also gain valuable work experience with an
innovative technology in medical device development
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The candidate selected to fill this position will
assist the Senior Operations Engineer to:
¨ Build engineering samples in various
configurations to aid engineering decision-making
¨ Implement corrective actions for manufacturing related issues
¨ Develop new processes, improve manufacturing methods, and tooling
¨ Conduct verification testing and document results
¨ Collect and analyze data using
statistical methods and write process validation reports
¨ Perform studies and analysis to optimize workspace efficiency
¨ Write and execute repeatability and reproducibility studies
¨ Write work instructions and bill of
materials for products and sub-assemblies
¨ Coordinate the organization and archiving
of validation protocols and reports
¨ Thrive in a highly collaborative, team-based environment
¨ Want to have fun, be creative, and deliver extraordinary results
CANDIDATE EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
¨ Graduate student with a BS Degree in
Engineering with medical device experience
preferred; undergraduates with strong skill sets
and recommendations will be considered
¨ Articulate – Strong written and oral
English communications skills; secondary languages are a plus
¨ Strong consideration given to candidates
with particular interest in process,
manufacturing, materials and/or quality
engineering within the medical device industry
¨ International students welcome to apply
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
¨ Ability to work inside/outside cleanroom environment
¨ Regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds,
frequently lift or move 25 pounds, occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds
¨ Vision ability should includes close-up,
distance, color perception, peripheral acuity,
depth perception, and ability to readily adjust focus
¨ Regular use of a microscope
